additive
primaries:
Red, green, and blue light, which produce white light when combined. Compare with
subtractive primaries.alpha channel:
An 8-bit channel reserved by some imageprocessing applications for masking or additional
color information.
anti-aliasing:
The rendering of hard-edged objects so they blend smoothly into the
background in order to eliminate jagged edges. A technique for merging object-oriented art
into bitmaps.
artifacts:
A visible indication (defect) in an image, caused by limitations in the reproduction
process (hardware or software).
ASCII:
American Standard Code for Information Interchange; a common file format for plain text.
accordion fold
Parallel folds, alternating in direction. Also called concertina fold. additive mixing of
colour occurs when two colours of light stimulate the same patch of retina. In commercial
colour printing, the halftone dots and the overlaps between them together comprise only
six colours, plus black. The sensation of full colour on a page results from additive
mixture of these six colours. See secondary colour.
alignment
The positioning of text within margins. Text flush with the margins on both sides is
referred to as justified. Text is often aligned with only one margin, either the left or
the right, and is then described as right/left justified or as ragged left/right.
anchor point
A key element in vector graphics. Curves can be defined, for example, by using the mouse
to select anchor points and directions. Pieces of an image can be selected and moved
around by moving anchor points. See Bezier curve and vector graphics.
ascender
The part of lowercase letters (such as k, b, and d) that ascends above the x-height of the
other lowercase letters in a typeface.
