ellipsis
A punctuation character consisting of three dots, or periods, in a row. It indicates that
a word or phrase has been omitted. To access the ellipsis character in standard typefaces,
press Option + semicolon.
elliptical halftone dots
Elongated halftone dots used to improve the tonal mid-range. Resolution into elliptical
dots can be done photographically by means of a special screen.
embossing
Producing a raised image in paper by means of a die striking from the back of the paper
into a recessed counter die at the front.
em, em space, em quad
A common unit of measurement in typography. The em is traditionally the width of the
uppercase M in whatever font is being used. It defines the font's point size. For example,
in 12-point type, one em is a distance of 12 points.
em dash
A dash the length of an em is used to indicate a break in a sentence.
en, en space, en quad
A common unit of measurement in typography. Traditionally, the en is the width of the
uppercase N in the typeface and point size being used. Technically, it is defined as half
the width of an em.
en dash
A dash the length of an en is used to indicate a range of values.
endpapers
The heavy paper at the front and back of a book, to which coverboard is glued.
