TAC (Total Area Coverage)
in commercial full-colour printing, TAC is a measure of the amount of ink applied by a printing press. In the CMYK printing process, W con range from 400% (all inks of full intensity) to 0% (no inks / plain paper). However, commercial printers will rarely will cover TAC of higher than 300%.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
A file format that was specifically developed for page layout applications and is supported by all image editing applications. TIFF files (an save RGB, CMYK, and CIE LAB colour information, but not duotones).

TIFF
An abbreviation for Tagged Image File Format, which is the standard for bitmap graphics in print publishing. Many graphics in electronic documents will start out as TIFF files. However, Web browsers do not know how to display TIFF files, so you will have to translate TIFF formats to a recognised Web format (GIF or JPEG). Fortunately, most HTML editors and Web-publishing programs do this automatically. For PDF flies, TIFF works well.

Tone
The variation in a colour or the range of greys between black and white.

Tonal Range
The difference in brightness between the lightest and darkest colours in an image.

Transmissive media
Materials that allow light to pass through them. Examples include photographic film, 35mm slides, overhead sheets, and transparencies.

Tritone
A greyscale image that is reproduced using three inks. The additional inks add tonal depth to the image.

True Colour
A term referring to digital RGB colour that is composed of 24-bits, or 16.7 million colours.

Thumbnail
A visual table of contents for a PDF document composed of tiny previews of each page. Readers can use thumbnails to quickly locate and jump to different pages.

Three-Colour Printing (CMY)
A printing process that uses three semitransparent inks, cyan, magenta, and yellow, to produce all other colours.

Tone
The variation in a colour or the range of greys between black and white.

Tonal Range
The difference in brightness between the lightest and darkest colours in an image.

tabular figures
Numerals that all have the same width. This makes it easier to set tables of data.

tack
Adhesive quality, or stickiness, of ink. thermography An embossed effect obtained by applying resinous powder to a wet image and fusing it with heat.

thinners
Liquids mixed with ink to reduce tack.

three-colour process
The conventional four-colour process omitting black.

tint
Tints of a screened colour differ only in the size of the dots, not in the proportions of component primaries. They vary in tonal strength, but not in hue.

tissue overlay
A tissue flap attached to artwork as a protective cover.

tracking
The average space between characters in a block of ten Sometimes also referred to as letter spacing.

trapping
In colour printing, any of several methods used to prevent visible gaps from appearing between two adjacent regions not bridged by a common ink. Such gaps can result from the occasional slight misalignment of different colour impressions. Trapping often involves expanding the lighter of two adjoining regions so as to overlap with the darker

trim marks
Marks indicating where to trim. Also called cut marks.

TrueType
A scalable type technology.

turnaround
The time from start to finish of a particular job.

Type 1
The international standard format for digital type, available on almost every computer platform. Originally invented by Adobe Systems, Type 1 is now the most commonly available digital type format and is used by professional digital graphic designers. More than 30,000 fonts are available in the Type I format.

typeface
A design for the letters, numbers, and symbol comprising a font, often part of a family of co-ordinated designs. Individual typefaces are usually identified by a family name and some additional terms indicating style, weight, and width.

typeface family See font family.

typeface styles
Within a typeface family, variants such as roman, back slant, and italic.

typeface weights
Darkness variants within a single typeface family, including thin, light, bold, extra-bold and black.

typeface widths
Width variants within a single typeface family, including extended, condensed, and normal width.

typographic colour
The darkness of a block of text. This depends on the thickness of the strokes that make up the characters, as well as the point size and leading used for setting the text block.
